Teacher Bio - On September 28th, Maize School District Superintendent Doug Powers was joined by community members, newspaper reporters and television cameras from Wichita station KAKE-TV to honor Stanley Bergkamp, who was chosen as the recipient of the Educating Excellence award in September. Friends and supporters of Bergkamp, who teaches AP Chemistry and Physics at Maize High School in Maize, Kansas, gathered at what was to be a typical teachers' meeting to see the surprised honoree receive a check for $1,500. Although Bergkamp was awarded the Educating Excellence honor, this isn't the first time he has been recognized for his contributions to the teaching profession. In 2005, Bergkamp was selected to receive the Milken Educator Award, one of the nation's most prestigious honors for K-12 educators. To say that Stan Bergkamp is an award-winning teacher and outstanding educator is an understatement!
In letters written to nominate "Mr. B-kamp" for this award, students and co-workers alike credited his standout teaching style to real-world classroom examples, his contagious enthusiasm for science and an avid sense of humor. Bergkamp was also described as an accessible teacher who removes learning roadblocks for students and goes the extra mile to engage learners in the classroom.
In addition to his outstanding classroom contributions, Bergkamp spent seven years on the School Improvement Committee in the Maize School District. Supporters note that not only is Bergkamp a true champion for young people in his classroom, he is also a dedicated advocate who is passionate about helping both his high school and the District achieve its academic goals.
Congratulations Mr. B-kamp, for a job well done!
